Many Norse sagas feature tales of these strong, scaly creatures, and it wasn't uncommon to see their form gracing longships and jewelry. Dragons played a vital role in Norse mythology, culture, and society. Three of the most well-known were Jormungand (also called the Midgard serpent), Nidhogg, and Fafnir. Jormungand, the great beast, was the child of Loki and nemesis of Thor. Nidhogg was a fearsome creature who gnawed at the roots of Yggdrasil. Fafnir was a dwarf prince condemned to be a dragon by a cursed ring.
